  • No future Planning- Example: your organization may have provided 100 Mbps connections while 1Gbps is supposed to be the excellent standard. Now, your organization is planning to shift to another location, where new cable installation will be required. In that case will you opt for older cable technology or you would prefer to use new cabling, which will meet to your requirement not just today but also for the next few years? Many organizations may not require 10 Gbps right away, but it’s still important to plan ahead and opt for higher versions.
  • Use different cabling for data and voice- Twisted pair cables were expensive, so typically, different cabling for data and voice were used. Today, an entire installation can be expensive but the major cost is usually labour & cabling which isn’t that expensive. Furthermore, with the popularity of VoIP, this too needs data cabling. So don’t take your cabling for granted and don’t use any old category 3 data cable installation for voice. For a separate cable for your phone, do not forget to match the right data cable.

 

  • Avoiding cable management– Cable management is usually regarded as a “would have been nice if” kind of scenario. If you add ladder rack cable management or rack-based ones, etc they do not add to your cost; in fact it will make the ongoing maintenance very easy. Remember data cable installation won’t stop because cables will keep on being added; so ensure that you tag appropriate colour-code cables/use some process to identify cables easily every time.
  • Running cable parallel to electrical cables- Unshielded twisted pairs are used for data cable installation and the magnetic element generated through these cables is an important factor of such a communication chain. When unshielded data cabling is run in parallel to electrical cables, the magnetic field gets disrupted which makes the communication noisy and distorted.

 

  • Data cable installation near “noisy” fixtures and devices- Noise generated by motors, fluorescent lighting and any similar objects that throws magnetic or electrical interference can have a negative impact on data cabling. While you are planning the installation, ensure that you keep your data cable path away from these sources; it helps prevent issues such as these and will provide you seamless and uninterrupted connectivity.
